Calibration Standards

Accurate measurement of fine particle size materials is important in a wide range of applications: acrylic latex paints, impact modifiers, emulsion based adhesives, PVC resins, pigments, fillers, carbon blacks, abrasives, photographic emulsions, and many others.

CPS Instruments Europe offers a series of calibration size standards in the submicroscopic to macroscopic size range. These standards can be used with a variety of particle sizing equipment to verify instrument calibration. Customers who purchase the CPS Disc Centrifuge receive two of these calibration standards for use with their instrument.

The sizes of CPS calibration standards are verified by direct physical means (eg. sedimentation rate under known conditions or sieve analysis using certified seives). All calibration standards are also cross-checked by measurement against other NIST tracable standards using the CPS Disc Centrifuge when smaller than 100 microns. All standards are guaranteed to be correct in both stated average size (+/- 2%), distribution width (that is, total distribution width and/or half-height width), and with respect to the presence of agglomerates of the primary particles. Many calibration standards below 5 microns particle diameter contain a fraction of agglomerated particles. The majority of agglomerate material in a calibration standard is usually in the form of 'doublets' (two primary particles stuck together), though some standards also contain a fraction of triplet, quadruplet, and higher agglomerates as well. Agglomerates can lead to significant errors in instrument calibration, especially for systems based upon laser light scattering or particle counting, since these systems often do not have sufficient resolving power to differentiate between primary and agglomerated particles.

Available Calibration Standards

Standards below 10 microns diameter are normally sold as dispersions in water, although many can also be prepared as non-aqueous dispersions. Standards above 10 micron diameter are available as an aqueous dispersion, a non-aqueous dispersion, or as dry powder. Each standard is shipped with a particle size distribution and certificate of analysis. Please be aware that it may be necessary to substitute a slightly different size standard if stock of one particular size is not available. All aqueous samples are stabilized with an anionic emulsifier unless the purchaser specifies otherwise.

Standards between 0.1 micron and 2 microns are also available in a range of other polymers, including polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, and polyvinylidene chloride. Certified standards can be produced to your specification by special order. In most cases, we can ship a special order standard that is +/- 5% from your requested (target) size. The standards are all spherical (or nearly spherical), non-porous, PVC homopolymer or copolymer particles, and are normally sold as either an aqueous suspension (125 ml) or as a dry powder. Sizes larger than 25 microns contain 10 grams active weight, sizes smaler than 25 microns contain 5 grams active weight.
